Accessing Wikipedia While the SOPA Screen Is in Place

Wikipedia’s SOPA protest screen

At a friend’s request, I decided to put up this post—in case someone finds it useful!

Today, January 18, 2011, Wikipedia is protesting against SOPA and has blocked access to its content. But if you want to, you can still view that content. Wikipedia hasn’t removed the content; it has simply added a new div to every page containing an overlay with information about the protest against SOPA. It has also added the display=none style to the content layers. All of this is easily disabled with the following script (I wrote it in 1–2 minutes), which you run from the Chrome or Firefox console:

var jq = document.createElement('script');
jq.src = "https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.6.2/jquery.min.js";
document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(jq);
$('#mw-sopaOverlay').remove();
$('#content').show();

It’s all straightforward: the first three lines load jquery, the fourth line removes the SOPA layer, and the fifth line shows the content layer. You can hook this script up to Greaemonkey, and then all of Wikipedia will automatically display normally, just as before. And yes, I support their protest against SOPA. It’s just that sometimes you urgently need information, even if it’s hidden.
