FireFox Extensions for Web Development
At the beginning of 2008, I already wrote about the FireFox plugins I use, but back then it was about version 2 of the browser. Now I use version 3, and my tastes have changed too.
I got rid of Web Developer because I no longer needed the extension.
The only things I ever need it for are:
- Disabling all styles
- Measuring pixels with a ruler (Ruler)
- Resizing the browser window to test at all screen resolutions
But those things aren’t that important to me, whereas its size is.
Extensions I use:
Adding and editing cookies to test your web applications. Current version: 0.2.1.3
An extremely powerful client-side debugger. It also provides integration with other extensions for both client-side and server-side debugging (FirePHP, FirePython, etc.). More details in Russian are available on the official website pages. Current version: 1.3.3
Lets you take screenshots of the pages you open. Unlike other tools of this kind, this add-on gives users a whole range of tools for editing screenshots and adding graphical and text annotations. This functionality will be useful for web developers, testers, and editors. Screenshots can be uploaded to an image server, saved to disk (in PNG, GIF, JPEG, or BMP format), printed, copied to the clipboard, emailed, or exported to an external editor for further processing. Current version: 0.69
Lets you capture practically any URL, correctly identify referrers, arrange downloads of groups of similar files on a single page, and create file galleries. It can also capture headers and streams containing audio/video and other multimedia, such as those played in Flash players. Current version: 1.1.8.6
Essential for quick access to Google services. I keep it for:
- Gmail notifier
- Translator (the most important thing)
- Checking PR
- List of visited sites + search history
All Google Toolbar features Current version: 5.0.20090324W
A feature-rich session manager. Saves and restores the state of all windows. Very convenient to use: when FireFox crashes, it can restore not just the last session (since that may be the problematic one—the very session that caused FF to crash), but any session at all (it saves sessions automatically). Naturally, you can also save sessions manually. Current version: 0.6.4.6
A sniffer for HTTP headers and POST data. It also provides the ability to generate a profile for http://httpd.apache.org/test/flood/ Current version: 0.14
More useful extensions:
Extracts all selectors from all style sheets on the page you’re viewing, then analyzes the page to find unused selectors.
An alternative to Live HTTP Headers, just “the same thing from a different angle,” dressed up as a “FireBug-style panel.”
If you use Firefox on multiple computers, you need Foxmarks. Install the Foxmarks extension on each computer, and it will unobtrusively synchronize your saved bookmarks and passwords (optionally) in the background. Web access is also available!
