Microsoft Releases a Beta Version of Internet Explorer 8

ie8

Microsoft has released the first beta version of the Internet Explorer 8 browser. For now, the program is intended only as a preview for web developers and designers. IE 8 introduces a new feature called Activities, which lets users find information related to data on a web page or send the page’s contents to another application. Another new feature is WebSlices. It lets users track changes to a specific portion of a page. Apple previously introduced a similar feature in its Safari browser under the name Web Clip.

By default, the browser displays pages in web standards compliance mode. It can also be switched to Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Explorer 7 modes. Many of the browser’s modules are said to work more efficiently.

The new browser runs on Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Server 2008, Windows XP SP2, and Windows Vista. On XP, 64 megabytes of memory is enough for Internet Explorer 8; on Windows Server 2003, it requires 128 megabytes, and on Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, 512 megabytes.

Only the English version of IE8 is currently available; German and Simplified Chinese versions will appear soon.
