A List of Plugins for FireFox 2—Making Life Easier for Web Programmers!

Firefox Add-ons banner

So, it’s my turn to publish my indispensable plugins for FireFox—they really do help me out every day! This selection will suit web programmers, layout developers, security experts, SEO specialists, and, to some extent, ordinary users too.

In this post I’ll be talking about Web Developer, FireBug, View Source Chart, Edit Cookies, HTML Validator, Tamper Data, PHP Lookup, SeoQuake, HeaderMonitor, ShowIP, Session Manage, FlashGot, and FasterFox.

Now let’s look at everything in more detail!

Web Developer (current version 1.1.4)

“If you build websites and haven’t tried this tool yet, be sure to install Web Developer. Development will be faster, fixing errors will become more efficient, and many routine tasks will become simpler and more accessible.” Web Developer can:

  • Edit cookies;
  • Change screen dimensions using predefined presets (1024x768, 800x600, etc.) and resize frames;
  • Block images from external sites, meta redirects, and print CSS (and not just print CSS);
  • Show the order of divs, element information, object information, and table information;
  • Outline all images, background images, external links, headings, and positioned elements;
  • Show hidden elements, the window edge, color information, document size, and meta tag information;
  • And much more—just install the plugin and you’ll see. :)

You can install it from here: https://addons.mozilla.org/ru/firefox/addon/60

FireBug (current version 1.05)

“Firebug integrates with the Firefox browser to provide a wonderful addition to the developer’s toolkit. You’ll be able to edit, debug, and inspect CSS, HTML, and Javascript live on any web page!” I’ll add that it has an excellent profiler that lets you identify the parts of the loading process that slow down your site; you can use it to catch AJAX requests… and so much more. It’s an indispensable plugin for every web developer! It’s also available in a “Lite” version as a JavaScript library for IE, Opera, Safari, etc. You can install it from here: https://addons.mozilla.org/ru/firefox/addon/1843 More about FireBug here: http://www.firebug.ru/

View Source Chart (current version 2.5.03)

View the page markup’s source code (displayed as a structural diagram), with everything organized into blocks (the blocks can be collapsed and expanded, and they’re colored differently too) and really nice syntax highlighting! You can install it from here: https://addons.mozilla.org/ru/firefox/addon/655

Edit Cookies (current version 0.2.2.1)

Although Web Developer supports editing and viewing cookies, I liked this plugin better! It can edit, add, and delete cookies! :) And if you’re starting to wonder, “What do you need it for, anyway?”, my answer is, “You need it to test a site’s security—or perhaps not for testing at all, but you definitely need it ;)”. You can install it from here: https://addons.mozilla.org/ru/firefox/addon/4510

HTML Validator (current version 0.8.4.0)

One of the very best HTML validators (programs that check the correctness of a page’s HTML code). It supports three algorithms: HTML Tidy, SGML Parser, and Serial. The status bar displays information about violations and errors in the markup (according to the selected algorithm). When you view a page’s source code, it also displays a list of recommendations for fixing markup errors and the line numbers where errors occur. You can install it from here: https://addons.mozilla.org/ru/firefox/addon/249

Tamper Data (current version 9.8.1)

A sniffer for HTTP/HTTPS headers and POST data, with the ability to modify that very data! Before this I used Proxomitron, but I’m always moving around: Windows, then Linux, then FreeBSD, then Solaris… and so on. Now I’m planning to move to Mac OS X! So I needed a cross-platform solution, such as a FireFox plugin in the form of “Tamper Data”. I chose from among similar plugins, but I liked this one best. Maybe you’ll like it too ;) There’s another alternative to this plugin, also a FireFox plugin, called LiveHTTPHeaders. I liked that one too, but I had to pick just one—I’ve already added far too many extensions :) You can install it from here: https://addons.mozilla.org/ru/firefox/addon/966

PHP Lookup (current version 0.1.1)

Well, it’s hard to even call this a plugin… A little add-on: a field appears on the toolbar, you type a PHP function into it, and you’re taken to that function’s manual section on the official site (similar to the “search for” field on the official site). I find it very convenient: there’s no need to visit the site or keep a tab/window open for the manual. You can install it from here: https://addons.mozilla.org/ru/firefox/addon/3505

SeoQuake (current version 2.0.11)

SeoQuake is a program that lets users retrieve an extensive range of SE (Search Engine) parameters for the page they’re viewing on the fly. SeoQuake consists of three functional parts: SeoToolbar (the requested parameters are displayed in a separate toolbar in the browser window), Seobar (the requested parameters are displayed as a separate block of HTML code, fully customizable using CSS), and a display of the requested parameters for search engine results. List of supported parameters:

  • Google (PR, Index, link, cachedate)
  • Yahoo (Index, link, Linkdomain (LD), Linkdomain2 (LD2), Directory)
  • MSN Index
  • Yandex (CY, index, catalogue)
  • Rambler (index, top100)
  • Seodigger
  • DMOZ Directory
  • Alexa Rank
  • WebArchive age
  • Del.icio.us index
  • Technorati index
  • Digg index
  • IP lookup
  • Whois link
  • View source
  • Check robots.txt
  • Page links (Shows the number of internal/external links, with a link to the list of links.)
  • Baidu index
  • Baidu link
  • Wikipedia (EN)
  • Ask index
  • Bloglines

You can configure any custom parameters of your own, and a “density” function is also available. It’s also available as an extension for IE, Maxthon, and Avant. You can install it from here: https://addons.mozilla.org/ru/firefox/addon/3036 More about SeoQuake here: http://www.seoquake.com/index.php?sln=ru

HeaderMonitor (current version 0.3.4.1)

The status bar displays the headers you select that are sent by the web server (there’s quite a large selection of headers in the settings; personally, I use the “Server” header (web server name, interpreter version, modules). Incidentally, this plugin’s engine is based on LiveHTTPHeaders, which I already mentioned as an alternative to “Tamper Data”. You can install it from here: https://addons.mozilla.org/ru/firefox/addon/575

ShowIP (current version 0.8.05)

Displays the IP address of the web server that served the current page in the status bar. The following services are also available: Whois, Traceroute, ip2country. You can install it from here: https://addons.mozilla.org/ru/firefox/addon/590

Session Manager/Session Manager (current version 0.6.1.8)

A feature-rich session manager! Saves and restores the state of all windows, and keeps a history of closed windows and tabs. Very convenient to use: if FireFox crashes, it can restore not just the last session (since that may be the faulty one, i.e., the one that caused FF to crash), but any session at all (it autosaves sessions). Naturally, you can also save sessions manually. You can install it from here: https://addons.mozilla.org/ru/firefox/addon/2324

FlashGot (current version 0.7.7)

This plugin prompted me to install Download Master. It’s needed for full integration of Download Master into Mozilla Corporation’s products (specifically Mozilla, Mozilla Firefox, Seamonkey, Flock, and Thunderbird). It lets you intercept practically any URL, correctly identify referrers, arrange downloads of groups of similar files on a single page, create file galleries, and so on. Download managers supported by FlashGot: Download Master, FlashGet, Free Download Manager, Fresh Download, GetRight, GigaGet, HiDownload, iGetter, InstantGet, Internet Download Accelerator, Internet Download Manager, LeechGet, Mass Downloader, Net Transport, NetXfer (Net Transport 2), NetAnts, ReGet, Star Downloader, Thunder, TrueDownloader, WellGet, wxDownload Fast, Speed Download, Aria, cURL, Downloader 4 X, GNOME Gwget, KDE KGet. You can install it from here: https://addons.mozilla.org/ru/firefox/addon/220

FasterFox (current version 2.0.0)

This plugin is designed to speed up web page loading. Main features: md5-0078f8f1c8d188b796cfb99e7b2dfe09 You can install it from here: https://addons.mozilla.org/ru/firefox/addon/1269 Description on Wikipedia: http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fasterfox Official site: http://fasterfox.mozdev.org/

That’s my selection of plugins—I’d be very happy if you shared yours too!

UPD: ColorfulTabs—this plugin marks tabs with different colors, making them visually distinct and more convenient to work with!
